Tinley Park-Park District Special Events

Looking for a day of fun and activity? You've come to the right place!

The Tinley Park-Park District organizes a variety of special events for everyone! Whether it's a Clover or Easter Egg Hunt, a trip to see a play or professional sports team, a Mother/Son Sock Hop, or just shooting some baskets at the Rec Center; we've got something that will excite you!

Upcoming Events

Let's Go Fly a Kite / Touch a Truck

Date: Saturday, September 27
Time: 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
Location: Community Park (8125 W. 171st Street)
Fee: Free

Join us for a fun filled afternoon of kite flying and exploring trucks and other amazing vehicles! Families should bring their own kites ready to fly. A kite hospital will be on hand to handle kite emergencies.

Ghostly Golf

Date: Friday, October 3
Time: 6:00-8:30 p.m.
Location: Tinley Junction Miniature Golf and Batting Cages (16801 S. 80th Avenue)
Fee: $7 per person

It's going to be one spooky night! Join us for a game of night time golf at the Tinley Junction Miniature Golf Course. We'll have it decorated for the season and each child will receive a mini pumpkin after playing a game of mini golf! You may even wear your Halloween costume if you'd like. No need to register - just show up for the fun!

Dog's Howl-o-ween Day in the Park

Date: Sunday, October 5

Pamper your pooch with a day of fun and games just for dogs! Come on out during this fun-filled event and participate in canine contests, dog obedience demos, costume contests, exciting animal activities, contests, adoption info, and more. Various agencies and vendors will be showcased to help you learn about the best buys and care for your pooch. Bring your best friend and experience a day of fun for the whole family! All dogs must be tagged and leashed during the entire event. No registration necessary.

Fall Arts and Craft Fair

Date: Saturday, October 11
Time: 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.
Location: Tony Bettenhausen Recreation Center (8125 W. 171st Street)
Fee: Free to shop ($25 per space and 6-ft table / $15 per space without table)

Welcome the fall season with lovely new crafts for your home. The fair will highlight many of the talented crafters in the community. Exhibits are open to the public at no charge. If you would like to be an exhibitor, please stop by the Park District office to register. PLEASE NOTE: COMMERCIAL ITEMS ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR THIS SHOW. Registration ends on September 20 or when filled.

A Boo-tiful Time with Mom/Dad

Pumpkin Creations

Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" (Rated R)

Date: Friday, October 24

Get ready for Halloween with one of the most terrifying films of all time, now showing again on the big screen. Countlessly imitated but never equaled, Psycho's tale of a strange young man and his possessive mother features the now-famous shower scene, the sinister Bates Motel, and the creepy house that overlooks it. This move is rated R, and minors under 17 must be accompanied by someone over 18 years of age. Refreshments will be available for purchase. Tickets can be purchased at the main desk of the Tony Bettenhausen Recreation Center, or at the theater box office 30 minutes before showtime.

Haunted Halloween Happenings Open House

Be prepared this year for another haunted Halloween event at the Tony Bettenhausen Recreation Center! Join us for ghoulish games, ghostly stories, frightening face painting, spooktacular crafts, LIVE creepy crawly critters, and our scare Haunted House. Each participant receives a FREE Halloween bag, taffy apple, and prizes. Registration is not necessary, just come for the fun! Costumes are optional. Beware! You're in for a frightfully fun time! Thanks to the amazingly talented volunteers from Andrew High School for helping with this event!

Santa's Mailbox

Due to the large volume of Christmas mail last year, the Tinley Park-Park District has been asked to help with the mail delivery to the North Pole. Children who would like to write to Santa and receive a personal letter from him should drop off their letters at "Santa's Mailbox". It will be located in the Tony Bettenhausen Recreation Center during office hours from November 1 through December 1. Children age 3-12 only please. Don't forget to include your address for Santa! Because Santa will be busy packing his sleigh for Christmas night, he will only be able to answer letters received on or before December 1. Free!

Calls from Santa

Ho! Ho! Ho! The Park District has made special arrangements for children age 4-10 to receive a call from Santa Claus. Calls will be made from December 5-19 between 3:00-7:00 p.m. at Santa's convenience. Participants must register at the Park District office between November 1 and December 1 by completing one of Santa's special calling forms. If there is more than one child in a family who wishes a call from Santa, he will make one phone call and talk to each child. He will not make several calls.

Turkey Trot 5K Run/Walk

Date: Sunday, November 9
Time: 8:00 a.m. (registration opens at 7:00 a.m. on race day)
Location: Vogt Woods (6527 W. 171st Street)
Age: All ages (see race registration form or brochure for categories)
Fee: $17 without shirt or $20 with shirt (pre-registration) / $30 on race day

Awards will be given for first, second, and third place runners in all age categories, male and female, based on chip timing. An award will also be given to the best overall resident and non-resident male and female runner. Unisex tech shirts will be awarded to the first 550 registered participants. Pre-registration closes October 31 at 3:00 p.m. Registration and pre-registration pick-up will open again at 7:00 a.m. on race day at Vogt Woods.

Smile with Santa

Date: Saturday, November 15
Time: 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
Location: Tony Bettenhausen Recreation Center (8125 W. 171st Street)
Fee: $15 per picture package / $12 for a CD of photos / $7 for each 5x7 on Nov. 15

Don't miss this chance to visit with Santa and have your picture taken with him. The photo package consists of one 5x7, two 3x5, and eight wallet photos for $15. The packages will be mailed to your home by December 8. There will also be a special offer of one 5x7 picture for $7. These pictures will be available within 15 minutes after the picture is taken on November 15. No registration needed. Please bring exact dollar amount. Fee must be paid on November 15 before pictures are taken.

Princess Party

Thanksgiving Centerpiece Fun

This event is meant to be a special family outing to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday. Take time out of your busy schedule to enjoy designing and decorating a special centerpiece for your home. We will provide everything you need along with a special holiday snack and beverage. One centerpiece per group.

The Polar Express Storytime Train*

All aboard! The Polar Express Storytime Train will leave the Tinley Park train station on December 7 for a trip to the North Pole (Joliet train station) to visit with Santa. Take this exciting train ride, based on the book, The Polar Express, by Chris Van Allsburg. A storyteller will be on the train to narrate this story while children and thier parents enjoy Christmas cookies. When we reach the North Pole, we will find Santa Claus and bring him back to Tinley Park with us on the train. A parent or guardian must accompany all children. Children age 9 months or younger do not need a ticket. Tickets sell out quickly, so register early! *Online registration is not available for this program.

Rudolph Dash

Santa's reindeer are busy getting ready for the big night. Join us as we have some fun getting in shape too! We will warm up with fun fitness activities, then head to the indoor track for our dash! Kids will run twice around the track and a special visitor will meet them at the finish line. Once everyone has had a chance to partake in the activities, Rudolph will lead everyone to visit with Santa where they will enjoy hot chocolate, cookies, and crafts! Parents do not need to stay for activities, but are invited to join us at 6:15 p.m. to take pictures with Santa.

"Elf" (Rated PG)

Buddy the Elf is in Tinley Park to spread Christmas cheer! Bring the family and join Buddy on his adventure from Santa's Workshop, through the seven levels of the Candy Cane forest, through the sea of swirly twirly gum drops, and through the Lincoln Tunnel to find his dad in New York City. This movie will be shown on the big screen at the Tinley Park Performing Arts Center. Activity packets will be available for purchase at a cost of $1, and include fun play along activities and snacks.
