The Lemont Area Historical Society Museum is a fascinating place, beginning with the very limestone with which it is built.
We learn about the early settlers in the area, hear stories about the colorful days when the Illinois & Michigan Canal was new and limestone quarrying was the area's biggest industry and view a 20-minute “Marble Valley” video about limestone quarrying in the area. After the museum tour, we enjoy lunch at a local restaurant for a plated meal. Then we go to the gazebo on the canal, near the end of the new Heritage Quarries parking lot, where our guide leads us on a walk along the Illinois & Michigan Canal. On the way to view three quarries, we learn about the construction and use of the I&M Canal, see the ruins of a brick kiln and hear about the quarry industry and workers. Registration fee includes tours, lunch and round-trip mini-motorcoach transportation.
